  • Research Site Introduction:

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) is the largest non-profit academic medical center in the western U.S. and since its founding in 1902, CSMC has focused on providing world-class medical care with special emphasis on education and translational research. The scope of research conducted at CSMC encompasses a broad spectrum of disease-related investigations, ranging from molecular genetics, biochemical analysis, and comparative animal research to clinical investigation, therapeutic trials, and patient care outcomes research. Over 1370 active projects are in progress involving more than 310 principal investigations and over 400 research employees. Of these funded projects, 76% are investigator-initiated. CSMC has one of the largest state-of-the-art clinical research facilities of any private hospital in the nation. The CSMC research laboratory space includes the 7-story, 216,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art Davis Research Building, adjacent to the main hospital towers.

  • Research Site Description:

Imaging studies will be performed in the newly constructed Biomedical Imaging Research Institute (BIRI) Research Imaging Core Facility on the ground floor of the Davis Research Building (7,600 sq. ft. lab space). The core facility houses a state-of-the-art Siemens 3T MRI scanner (Cima) equipped with TIM 4G (total imaging matrix 4G) technology and a high-performance gradient system (maximum strength 200 mT/m, slew rate 200 mT/m/ms). A Siemens whole-body clinical MRI system. Both scanners are 100% dedicated to imaging research, capable of imaging both humans and large animals (as proposed in this project), and are located at the ground level of the Davis Research Building.

CSMC is fully accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) for all research involving the protection of patients. The medical center has one of the largest state-of-the-art clinical research trial facilities of any private hospital in the nation. The 164,000-square-foot clinical research trial facility is a testament to the Medical Center's commitment to remain at the forefront of applying research discovery to patient care. The CSMC Burns and Allen Research Institute provides a strong scientific, clinical, and administration infrastructure to support these investigations. Patient studies will take place at the Research Imaging Core facility within BIRI. Two full-time research coordinators/nurses are available to coordinate and recruit patients and human volunteers for MRI studies. The BIRI Research Imaging Core facility is ideally located in close proximity to the hospital towers, and there are multiple ongoing pilot clinical studies conducted on the MRI scanners.
