Summary:
This study is recruiting healthy adults to gather clinical history and to collect blood at multiple time points to understand their immunity for participation in an influenza (“flu”) challenge study.
A flu challenge study tries to understand what happens when a person is infected with the flu virus and how the body controls the infection. To do this, we will admit healthy, non-pregnant individuals into an inpatient facility and infect or (“challenge”) them with a strain of the flu and follow them to see what symptoms occur and when they occur. The flu virus we will use to infect participants has circulated widely in humans beginning in 2018. We will draw blood and take nose swabs and nose washes before and after we infect participants to understand if having antibodies in the blood or nose before can protect from the flu or lead to a milder flu illness and how the body’s immune system responds to flu. Internet access will be available within the inpatient unit and individuals working or taking classes remotely may continue to do so.
Qualified Participants Must:
• 18 through 49 years old
•
Generally healthy
•
Available for approximately twelve days for an inpatient stay
•
Non-habitual smoker
•
Have not received an influenza vaccine in 2021
